Unified Creativity

I think that by nature we are made to be creative beings.  God Himself is Creator, and made us in Him image…including in His creativity.  Being creative on our own is easy.  Dreaming, imagining even physically creating music or art, plans or designs is not such a challenge on our own.  But when we need to fit that creativity into a world filled with other human beings operating in their own kinds of creativity, a large measure of humility must come into play.

It’s often the subtle attitudes of the heart that determine success in these matters.  Its easy to get set in our ways.  It’s easy to decide what we like, or what our natural tendencies would be, and decide that is the only way to do things.  That attitude removes the freedom from others to be creative.

Creativity in a group is very dependent on humility and kindness.  We must prefer each other in these settings and still bring fresh ideas to the table.  We’ve been given opportunities to put these disciplines into practice lately and it’s reminded me of the importance of them.  Working in unity is valuable.  Bringing fresh ideas is valuable.  Being willing to lay preferences aside is valuable.  Having the boldness to share your preferences is valuable.   It’s an organic process.  It doesn’t always look the same way twice, and it requires people who genuinely love each other.

The Lord invites us to walk creatively with Him.  He loves to hear our ideas, and help us accomplish them.  He also loves to share with us, His ideas, and invite us to help Him accomplish them.  The exchange is precious.

I want to pose a challenge to you and to myself, to be brave enough to love the creative people around us and to give them room to dream, and dare to share our dreams with them.  We might be surprised at the common ground we find, and the new horizons that emerge.
